How to Make Homemade Southern Cornbread
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and place a 10-inch cast iron skillet in the oven to heat.
- Whisk together cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter. Optionally whisk in sugar or honey for sweetness.
- Gently mix the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until just combined, leaving some lumps.
- Remove the hot skillet from the oven, add butter, and swirl to coat the skillet.
- Pour the batter into the hot skillet and listen for the sizzle as it hits the hot surface.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool slightly before slicing and serve warm.
