How to Make Homemade Southern Cornbread
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and place a 10-inch cast iron skillet in the oven to heat.
  2. Whisk together cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter. Optionally whisk in sugar or honey for sweetness.
  4. Gently mix the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until just combined, leaving some lumps.
  5. Remove the hot skillet from the oven, add butter, and swirl to coat the skillet.
  6. Pour the batter into the hot skillet and listen for the sizzle as it hits the hot surface.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool slightly before slicing and serve warm.
